Day Two--Tuesday

Did this all seem very futuristic and almost sci fi? Predict when and how ipads, ipods and iphones will impact your life both personal and teaching. Of everything you saw what was the one thing you want to use?

  1. As I had mentioned earlier, I attended an iPad class in June but it was more to just find out what the heck it was! I'm glad we had today to learn more about it. I actually feel an itch burning to go and purchase my own so I can become more familiar with how to use it. There are many personal and professional perks to owning one so it would be more bang for my buck for sure. I like the idea of being able to gain information almost anywhere and everywhere. I would like to use the iPad to record literature discussion groups in my class and as a way to document learning with the Evernote app. The Evernote app. is the one thing I am the most curious to learn more about this summer and use this fall. (I guess that means I need to go buy one then, huh?) I wonder if John Muir could hold a class next summer on grant writing so that teachers can take the lead to get some of this technology in our schools??

  2. Wow---this is quite a bit to grasp for one day. For my own personal use, the ipad seems like a great travel companion. It's so light and space saving, yet takes care of so many functions. Currently there is such a huge generation gap that exists between myself and my students. I have noticed that this is beginning to affect my teaching. By getting my hands on some of these high tech things today, I feel that I have taken the first step towards bridging that gap. I am excited about this, but terrified at the same time.

As for my classroom objectives, I have much more investigating to do. The classroom uses for ipad are not something I feel capable of elaborating on at this time. The ipads are really neat, but how do I keep kids focused? It seems that everyone who 'advertises' their own personal use will always share the 'time wasting'apps. Not sure what everyone else thinks, but I don't have time to feed a hamster, etc. I would, however, love to hear more about how teachers are using these in the classroom. I am not informed enough, but at present almost think that the lesser capable i-Pod nano might still be the way to go for me. What does anyone else think about this as a first step? Or is this just me trying to crawl before I walk?

  3. Today's presentation was exciting, amazing and made me feel that technology is now chaning faster than the speed of light. How many kindergarten students will be arriving at my door already being comfortable with using an ipod because they have been using them since they were toddlers. How fast can I become comfortable with the new technology? What is the most effective and efficient way to help my staff become comfortable with the new technology and how do we work to create learning activities that take full advantage of the new technology and match student need and state standards? Maybe all these questions are helping me get ready to start work on my project. The first resource I will return to is the list of apps presented in the Blooms Taxonomy format. The 2011-2012 school year will be an exciting year!

  4. There are many things you can do using ipads, ipods, itouch and smart phones! I learned so much and am anxious to put this technology to use. I think they will be used more each school year and will have an impact in both my personal and professtional life. The item I want to use the most is the iPad. I like the touch technology as well as the ease of use. Using apps is a new concept for me but I do see it as part of the future of technology. Great presentation today!

  5. Too much information! I have to focus on a few apps. I feel like I am one of the have nots - no WIFI, no Ipad, no Iphone.

I am glad to know what is out there. I personally can't afford all the technolgy but I can understand why we can't ignore it either. Student's are coming to school knowing how to use most of these things. I thought having Chris Longe as a presenter was worth while. She was extremely knowledgeable and applied many of the Apps to school settings.

It will be impossible for me to remember it all but the following will help me talk to the principal about what is needed to help the teachers with listening centers. This hub will allow teachers at the elementary level take advantage of the e-books that the district has already purchased. Thank you Chris.

    #9 - Create a Mini Listening Centre

Use a Belkin Rock Star to turn one iPod into a mini listening centre for 5 pupils.
Download or make your own or student voice recordings of favourite stories/rhymes. Get other pupils, teachers, parents or principal to read as well.
Create listening skills activities to develop auditory discrimination or meet student ESL/special needs.

I brought my Ipod touch today but because I don't have access to WiFi at home or school (I don't drink coffee either) I never knew what the Ipod could do except music.
I want an Ipad too - who do do I need to talk to about that? Thank you,

  6. Very much so....I realize for a lot of people it is anything but sci fi. For my level of comfort with the technology, it is beyond anything that I need or want to be a part of my personal life for now. Having said that, I do think the technology is amazing and see the potential, good and bad, within it. I don't anticipate i"devices" of any kind impacting my personal life until my daughter grows up and moves away. Then, I would love to have the ability to see and hear her through the capabilities of a device like an ipad. Perhaps the technology and I will meet sooner at school if funding trends improve.
The one thing I would like to use if I had it now would be the front and back camera feature to share vacation experiences with family.

  7. Today went much better!
    I'm glad I came back!
I'm glad somebody was willing to sit next to me today!

I found the presentations by Chris Longe incredibly informative and "i-opening!"
I considered myself skeptical, uncomfortable and very "backward" when it comes to technology.
After today I feel very excited and eager to learn more!
I would like to try the ipad2 and a document camera in my classroom next year for teaching REACH. I need to take the time to explore and practice before the new school year begins.
I would love to have Chris give a presentation to our staff sometime. She has a gift in relating technology to teachers!
I just had to buy a new iMac. I have a gift card for some Apps from the Mac people. Now I know how to decide what to get!

  8. This is my third try at posting today. So, before I waste any more time writing a long winded response. This will be a test.

  9. Okay, here is my second attempt at this. I had posted before 3:00 yesterday but it isn't here.

Anyway, I was so glad that I have a smart phone because that really made today's (yesterday's) learning about ipads, ipods, and itouches (sp?)less overwhelming than Monday's learning. At this point, I can see how a document camera would be a good asset for me to start using apps with my students. I now need to search a little harder to find apps that are appropriate for my 8th grade writers. :-)
